Uncertainty Management in a Manufacturing Environment Using Expert Systems
There exists today a variety of Computer Aided Process Planning (CAPP) systems that have been designed, developed and implemented irrespective of the facility's condition and status. It has been found in practice that CAPP systems developed so far do not deal with uncertainty in manufacturing. These systems instead of being dynamic, are static in nature. The CAPP systems developed so far do not consider the dynamic nature of the shop floor and therefore do not take decisions on real time basis.
CAPP systems need to deal with the uncertain and unpredictable nature of the shop floor on real time basis. An approach in this direction is what this thesis presents. The CAPP system developed moves away from the traditional systems. The system interfaces a generative CAPP system with the dynamic nature of the shop, and implements it within a computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) environment .
